FONES Update April 2015

Posted in School

On behalf of Friends Of North Elmham School ( FONES ) we would like to say a huge thank you to parents who supported us whilst we had the travelling Book Fair in school back in February. We raised a fantastic £226.66 which will be spent on new books for the library. We also have picked up a GO GO Dragon which the children will be getting involved with over the next month or so, so look out for this once it's finished somewhere in Norwich over the summer!

Our Friday after school Cake Bake sale is doing really well so thank you to all the parents/carers who have contributed to this and as from Friday 17th April FONES will change from cake baking to ice cream sales so let's hope for some nice weather.

Another date for your diary !!! It's back, with lots of stalls and entertainment, FONES FAMILY FUN FESTIVAL - SATURDAY 20th JUNE 4pm till late. Let's keep our fingers crossed for some lovely weather and we do hope to see as many of you as possible so keep an eye out for posters situated around the village in due course for more information.

School News December 2014

We are now well into our autumn term, and everyone seems to have settled in well, new staff and children alike. In November we have had a number of things to look forward to. We began Dance workshop for all classes this month with 'Slanted Dance', which so far have been a lot of fun and great exercise for all. There is also an inter-schools tag rugby tournament for years 4-6. We will also have had the NCBC Book Fair and Story Telling coming into school and a Clay Barn Christmas Pottery event organised by FONES on December 5th, so plenty going on! We will be starting our school preparations for Christmas, including a nativity by Key Stage 1 for parents and carers and FONES are organising a Christmas Disco for the whole school before we break up. We break up for Christmas on the 19th December 2014 returning on January 6th 2015.

Elmham School - October 2014

We have returned to School after a slightly extending summer holiday as a result of a nasty virus, that closed the school for the final three days of the summer term. The closure was necessary because of the amount of staff and pupils affected and the recommendation by the Authority for an intensive clean of the school before any one returned.

We welcome 17 new reception children and 1 child into year 6. We wish them all a happy and successful time at the school. The new reception children appear to be settling in well with Miss Hardingham. We have 3 new after school clubs (Football, Golf and Craft) starting over the next few weeks and we are looking forward to a Bollywood and Bhangra Dance Workshop Day in October.

We will also be celebrating Harvest Festival at Church on October 22nd at 1.30pm prior to breaking up for half term.

FONES - August 2014

Over the last few months FONES have been very busy organising and preparing for our annual Family Fun Festival, which was held on Saturday 28th June.
During this time we also planted 12 young trees at the bottom end of our school field (the start of a small orchard we hope!) The East of England Apples and Orchards Project kindly donated 10 Norfolk Apple trees and 2 Cherry trees to the school, with a further 8 Norfolk Apple varieties on back order for delivery this Winter. This is very exciting for the children to be able to see these young trees growing and changing - as they are, also for the children in future years to enjoy and see the benefit. A big Thank you to those of you who were part of this, from the organisation to the planting, and watering over the school breaks. They look fantastic on the field and are growing fast!

Our annual Family Fun Festival was held on Saturday 28th June at the school, and despite the weather - which we thought was going to hold out and be kind to us, (especially after so many of us did sun dances and had lots of things crossed!) but it decided to rain anyway, we had another successful year, with lots of families turning out in the drizzle and then the pouring rain to support us. So firstly I must say a huge THANK YOU to all of the families and friends who came along and joined in the fun and games, in great British spirit!

As I'm sure you are all well aware, these kinds of events don't just happen and come together on the day. Lots of time and thought, planning and organising goes into trying to make the Family Fun Festival an event that everyone will want to come and be part of, have fun at and remember. In light of this, I have lots of thank you's to mention to those involved with making it all come together on the day.

  • The George Hotel, Dereham - Gareth and Becks for the very kind donation of ale
  • Nick Garrod - for your marquee. Debbie Coull and Lydia for your tent

  • Julie and Christine from NECS -  for running your nail game, BBQ and donations
  • Lisa Digby - for balloon modelling. Mr Ellen - for making the brilliant 'Welly Wanging' trophies
  • Peter Fuller (Shelly's Dad) - for the use and donation of your BBQ
  • The Flower Festival committee - for the use of your bunting
  • Angie Redwood - for your face painting Harry Sinclair - for organising and playing music
  • Dereham Football Club – football coaching
  • Everyone who donated items and gifts for the tombolas and the raffle
  • All the parents and carers for all your hard work and commitment - FONES members and helpers, parents, carers, family and friends - for organising, shopping, storing, setting up, manning stalls, clearing away and getting very, very wet!
  • And last, but certainly not least, a massive THANK YOU to Nikki Bemrose for price matching our takings through Barclays Bank; This meant that FONES raised £947.00 and Nikki was able to price match £1000.00

Giving us a record grand total of £1947.00 profit this year
This is a huge amount of money and we are thinking carefully about the best way to use this to benefit all the children at North Elmham Primary School.
Here's a quick reminder of some of the things FONES have been able to provide for the children over the last couple of years, using money raised through fundraising events.

North Elmham School Logbook Scraps July 2014

Posted in School

Doing research on the soldiers who died during the two World Wars and hoping I could glean snippets about some of the men, I browsed through a few pages of the school Log Book which is now at the Records Office at County Hall.

Living in a rural area the school is closely tied to the seasons and the land, which is the chief provider of employment for the local workforce.
The school didn't break up for the Summer holidays until mid August (always known as the Harvest holidays) and on a number of occasions the Head Master and the Vicar could give extra holidays for various agricultural activities.

For instance in 1913
