Tennis Club - April 2016

Posted in Tennis

When you read this it will be Easter and summer just around the corner. Lovely long sunny days (hopefully) and perfect tennis weather (even more hopefully)!
We are looking forward to another successful season, our teams have all been entered into the various leagues that we play in. We play in the following leagues City League men's and ladies, A and B, the Castle Acre mixed doubles, the North Norfolk league, the Norfolk winter league so you can see we are an extremely busy club. It is quite a challenge trying to fit in all of the matches, home and away and also trying to get a team together every week throughout the season. It is something we all enjoy and if we win along the way, it is an added bonus.
The juniors also have a busy time entering competitions and tournaments at certain venues throughout Norfolk. There is also a busy coaching programme going on through the whole year. If you need to find out more information don't hesitate to contact the committee or our resident coach James Cane.
We are going to be running our tournaments differently this year, we will be playing in teams, covering all age groups, which will result in a final which will be held on our Presentation Day later in the year.
New members are always welcome with a beginners coaching session if anyone is interested.
Look forward to seeing you on the court.

Tennis Club - Feb 2016

Dear Readers,
Welcome to fabulous February.

A lovely time of year, knowing spring is just around the corner and good tennis playing weather (hopefully).

We held our annual New Year’s Day Wooden Racket Tournament, ten of us turned up and had a fantastic morning, staying after the tournament for a game of tennis with our up to date rackets. Well done to James Cane and Lesley Simkins for your victorious performance of brilliant tennis. The prize was a certificate of your success and being able to say you beat the rest of us! The trophy is a 6ft high wooden racket, where an engraved tag is added each year. We worked out that there is well over a hundred years of tournaments to be played on this trophy. Wonder who'll be reporting in the Elmham News then?

Coaching continues throughout the winter, James runs a fantastic programme of coaching with juniors and adults. Club sessions continue on Friday evening at 6.30 and Sunday morning at 10.00. Cardio tennis shoes are also proving to be extremely popular on a Saturday morning at 9.15, so you can see there is a lot going on at your local club that is recognised as a successful village club by the LTA.

It would be lovely to see new members coming along to join in the fun.

TENNIS CLUB - Dec 2015

Dear readers,

I can't believe I am writing this to go into the December news! Where has 2015 gone?

For North Elmham Tennis club, it's been a great year. We welcomed the president of the Norfolk LTA who praised and commended us for the work we have done within the village and for tennis.  We have held tournaments through the year where our members have thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and the BBQ. The junior members also enjoyed participating in the tournaments and they have also been successful when competing at tournaments across the county. We held a presentation day to celebrate the winners of the tournaments where Betty Bidewell, a founder member, presented the cups and trophies to the winners.

The coaching continues with James Cane who continues to provide North Elmham Tennis Club with his excellent coaching for junior and adult members of the club.

We held the AGM in October electing a new chairman, welcome to Humphrey Borgnis who has taken on the role. We would like to thank Catherine Newey for her sterling work and commitment to our club over the last few years. You will be missed but we look forward to seeing you on the court again.

This just leaves me to say happy Christmas to everyone, we wish you all a prosperous and healthy New Year. Don't forget our wooden racket tournament in 1st January, this has proved to be a very popular and cold morning.

TENNIS CLUB - October 2015

Dear readers,

We have come to the end of our tournament season. Many Sunday mornings we have spent competing at the club with determination, many laughs, brilliant standard of play and above all played with good sportsmanship. The junior tournaments have been played on Saturday mornings and have been run by Jim Biggie. There has been a good turnout at each date set and luckily the weather has been in our favour.

We held our presentation day on September 13th, following our usual Sunday morning club session. Luckily we had a beautiful sunny morning and afternoon. We invited Betty Bidewell, a founder member, whose name appears on the ladies singles cup many times. Hers is the first name in the cup in 1948.

Last month I gave the names of adult winners, this month is the turn of the juniors. They are as follows:-

Mini red - Jacob Luckett Mini orange - Max Rainbow
Under 12 - Josh Welling Under 14 - Tom Partridge
Under 18 - Dan Grigg
Also as part of the junior programme James, our coach, awards the Most Improved player in each age group. They are the following:-
Under 8 - Abi Phillips Under 10 - Jamie Seaman
Under 12 - Oliver O'Malley Under 14 - George Massey
Under 16 - Jack Buckle

A special trophy is awarded, The Bob Bidewell Cup, to the player, who has shown commitment, good sportsmanship, good court manners and a good all round individual. This has been awarded to Josh Welling.

The afternoon was an outstanding success with a good turnout of members, from all age groups. The BBQ was fantastic, as usual, thank you Linda Smith. Thank you Christine Skipper for organising the raffle and everyone else who turned up to make the day a success.
Our Chairman, Catherine Newey, has decided to stand down after 4 years. She has been a brilliant Chair who has pushed the club forward and helped the continuing success we have enjoyed as a village club in Norfolk. She was instrumental in the visit from the LTA earlier this year and has also been a brilliant player and joined the Ladies A team. Unfortunately work commitments have brought her to make the decision to pass this role on to somebody else. We are hoping Catherine will continue to be involved and we look forward to seeing her playing with us again soon at the club sessions. Thank you Catherine from all of the committee and members of North Elmham Tennis Club.
We are holding an AGM on October 5th at The Kings Head @7.30pm. We will be electing a new Chair and committee. If you're interested in joining us please do come along to give us your support, especially if you are a keen tennis player and want to become involved. You will be made very welcome.

Tennis Club - September 2015

Hi readers,

It is celebration time at North Elmham Tennis Club. Sunday 13th September is our special date for celebrating our tournament winners. We have decided to incorporate this after a club morning session. So it is normal club morning until noon followed by the presentation of the tournament trophies. Some of the trophies are as old as the club so there is a lot of history involved. We will then hold a very short AGM to elect new officers and will then continue the celebration with a BBQ so let's hope the weather is good for us.

The winners are as follows:-

  • Ladies Singles: Gloria Digby
  • Men's Singles: Shaun Bradshaw
  • Ladies Doubles: Gloria Digby and Sandra Henderson
  • Men's Doubles: Jim Biggie and Shaun Bradshaw
  • Mixed Doubles: James Cane and Clare Biggie
  • Social Mxd Doubles: To be played

Junior tournament winners will be announced next month as some still have to be played during September.

It would be nice to see people come along and celebrate with us and meet some of our members. Maybe dust off the racket that may be hiding in the back of a shed/garage and give it a go.
